MS Excel provides a facility of viewing the same worksheet simultaneously in more than one window. This is accomplished by selecting the New Window command in the Windows menu. Using MS Excel, a window can be arranged in different ways by using the Arrange command from the Windows menu.

If a user wants to move between different windows, he can do so by pressing Ctrl+F6 to go to the next window or by pressing Ctrl+Shift+F6 to go to the previous window. Backing Up Outlook Express And Other Files

It’s like losing your wallet. Losing your money isn’t so bad, but all that time getting new ID, credit cards, and other important papers is aggravating. On your computer there is a lot of data we take for granted every day.

Documents we have created, music we have downloaded, pictures we have saved, and so much more. Most people know its wise to back up those items onto a CD-ROM or onto storage space somewhere on the web, but what are some of the other things you should be backing up?

Do you allow cookies to be stored on your computer to remember your login information for websites that you visit a lot? Then you also need to find the “cookies” folder on your computer and back that up as well. In Windows 98 its in C:\windows\cookies. In Windows XP, its in C:\documents and settings\username\cookies.

Do you know all of your passwords by heart? Do you use a program to manage passwords? If you use a program, find it, probably in program files, and back up the files inside that folder that related to your saved password files. If you ever have to reinstall that program you can re-add those files into the new folder and have all of your old password files.

If you do not use a program, you need to have a system of recovering those passwords if your computer ever quits on you. If you do not have one, create one and add all of your new passwords you create to it. Don’t put it in your wallet.

Hit F3 on your computer and select search for files on C Drive. Type in (*).PWL(*) without the parenthesis. It’s the asterisk dot pwl asterisk with no spaces. Hit search and windows will find all of the password files for you. To find them manually, check C:\windows. Back up those files if you want your computer logins to remain the same.

What about your email? Not just the saved email, but the entire folder structure you spent time creating, your address book, and your account information with all of the right settings to send and receive email. You will want to back these up whenever you do all of your other backups.

First, how to backup all of the email and folder structure in Outlook Express. Open Outlook Express. Go to tools, options, maintenance. There will be a button there that says “store folder”. Click on “start” in your task bar. Go to run. Paste the path you just copied into the text box and hit enter. A folder will open. Go to edit, select all, then go to edit again and select “copy”. Now close that folder. Right click on your computer desktop, select new, folder.Rename that folder “mailbackup”. Open that folder. Go to edit, paste.

Leave that folder open so you can backup your mail account settings and information. Now go back to Outlook Express. Go to tools, accounts, mail. You will do the following for each mail account you have. Highlight one account, Click Export. Browse to where the mailbackup file is on your desktop and export it into there. Once you do that with each account, you can cancel out of the open dialog boxes.

Now, for your address book. Go to Outlook Express one more time. Go to export. Choose address book. Choose text file. Browse again to the mailbackup folder and export it to there.

Now using winzip or other file compression utility, you can zip the mailbackup folder up and back it up to CD-ROM or to an online storage place. Make a schedule of backing these things I have included in the article. Consider it insurance against a hard drive crash. Believe me, if you use the web a lot, you’d almost rather lose your wallet than lose all of your computer data.

Fonts, especially TrueType fonts, use quite a bit of system resources. For optimal performance, trim your fonts down to just those that you need to use on a daily basis and fonts that applications may require.

Tech support tells me to type 'regedt32' as opposed to 'regedit' to access the registry from the command line (Start > Run). I question the use of 'regedt32,' but he says to do it anyway. Whenever I use the registry editor, I recall this incident and never look up the tale of the two regs... until now.

Regedt32.exe is an alternative registry editor available with Windows NT/2000 with features of its own. Regedt32.exe does not support importing and exporting registration entries (.reg) files. Regedit has limitations of its own as quoted here:

"You cannot set the security for registry keys. You cannot view, edit, or search the value data types <>REG_EXPAND_SZ and <>REG_MULTI_SZ. If you try to view a <>REG_EXPAND_SZ value, Regedit.exe displays it as a binary data type. If you try to edit either of these data types, Regedit.exe saves it as <>REG_SZ, and the data type no longer performs its intended function. You cannot save or restore keys as hive files."

1. Oops. I left Caps lock on!

Now everything you just typed is in the wrong capitalisation. Don’t despair. Highlight the text and goto the Format menu and select Change Case from the drop down menu. Then just select your desired case from the list provided, which will probably be tOGGLE cASE.

2. While we are talking Cases.

Some useful shortcut keys:

Highlight your text and click Control Shift A to set it all to Upper Case.

Control Shift K will set it to Small capitals.

3. Moving quickly around your document.

Try these shortcuts to get around your document quickly.

Control Home: Go to the top of your document
Control Alt End: Go to the end of your document

6. Numbering the rows in your tables

How many times have you created a table where you just want the first column to be a numbered list. It’s easy to do this quickly. Simply select the column and click on the Numbering button on your Word toolbar. The same thing works if you select a row and want to have numbering across your columns

By reducing exposure time, SCIT provides an additional level of protection while efforts are ongoing to find and fix vulnerabilities and correct configuration errors.

The more data that your hard drive has on it, the longer it takes the PC to find the data it's looking for, thus slowing your computer down. By fixing this issue, you can reclaim much of the speed your computer has lost since you bought it.

The first step to speeding up your computer is to clean out your Internet cache. Your browser records all your recent surfing activity including a copy of web pages, images, and media, as well as a list of URLs or web sites you have visited. It's easy to see that if you surf the Internet very much, your computer will collect a large amount of data that does nothing but take up space. To clear you Internet cache, open up your browser to your home page. In this tutorial, we are using Internet Explorer. Click on the Tools button. Go to Internet Options. There will be several options available. Be sure to delete the Temporary Internet Files, Cookies, and History. While you are in the Internet Options window, it is a good idea to check how much disk space the Temporary Internet Files folder is using. It is recommended that you use 50MB to 250MB. I set mine to 2 days.

The second step is to find and delete old files that you don't need or use anymore. Most of these files will be located in the My Documents folder. To open up that folder, click the start button and then click on the Documents icon. On some computers you will need to click on the My Computer icon and then click on the My Documents icon. Once you have that folder open, find a file you want to delete and right click on it. Select delete, then confirm by clicking Yes. To select multiple files, hold down the Control button and select as many as you want. Then right click on one of the highlighted files and select delete. Once you confirm the deletion, they will be sent to the Recycle Bin. It is a good idea to search the sub folders to make sure there are no more files that you want to delete.

The newer versions of Windows, like XP and Vista, take occasional snapshots of your hard drive called Restore Points. They are created as a backup feature just in case something goes wrong with a software install or uninstall so you can restore your computer to an earlier working condition. While they are great to have, they can take up a lot of space on your hard drive. To remove all but the most recent restore point, click on the Start button, go to All Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click on Disk Cleanup. Select the C Drive and click OK. Click the More Options tab. In the box labeled System Restore, click the Clean Up button. Your old, unneeded restore points are removed from your hard drive now. You can disable System Restore if you want, but it is not covered in this tutorial and it is not recommended to do so.

Even though you have deleted a lot of files that you don't need, many of them are still stored on your hard drive in the Recycle Bin. In order to fully remove them from your hard drive, you must empty the Recycle Bin. The Recycle Bin icon is usually located on your desktop. Simply, find the icon and right click on it. Select Empty Recycle Bin and confirm by clicking Yes. Now you have finished deleting the unwanted files from your hard drive.

The final step needed to speed up your computer is to defragment your hard drive. Over the years, as more programs are installed and more files saved on your computer, less and less space is available for storage. Then, when a new, large file is saved on your hard drive it may be fragmented and saved in two or more spots on your hard drive. When the file is called on by the computer, it has to pull the file form two or more places and join them together in the memory before it can be used. Defragmenting your computer allows files to be moved and placed together in one spot, thus speeding up the retrieval process. To defragment your computer, click on the Start button, go to All Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click on Disk Defragmenter. Select the C Drive and click Defragment.

I have left out some important information. Most of these steps listed above can be controlled by one utility, Disk Cleanup. Click on the Start button, go to All Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click on Disk Cleanup. Select the C Drive and click OK. From this one place, you can delete Temporary Internet Files, empty the Recycle Bin, defrag your hard drive if needed, and more. Just check each item you want performed and click OK. Then confirm by clicking Yes.

How often do you perform the required maintenance? Some experts say that you should perform this type of maintenance every 6 months. I suggest that you do it more often, about once a month. In fact, if you spend a lot of time on the Internet like I do, it is a good idea to run the Disk Cleanup utility every week as a bare minimum. Then you can perform more in depth maintenance every month or two.

There are many other, more advanced steps that you can take to speed up your computer, like cleaning out your Temp folders, paring down the Startup folder, removing programs and Windows components you don't use, running anti-spyware and anti-virus programs, repairing or maintaining the registry, deleting old Windows Update files, and much more.
